In this article I will be discussing what to look for and how to care for Horsehair floggers. Horsehair floggers are a beautiful addition to any collection, but are not for everyone. Real horsehair floggers are very stingy and actually have very tiny barbs on the ends of the hair that you can’t see but definitely can feel. However, when used very lightly over the skin, they can be used for sensation play and aren't nearly as harsh.
Some of the things you should initially look for when purchasing a horse hair flogger, is of course, is it real horsehair? You would want to confirm that it is with your supplier. For the purposes of this discussion, we will assume that has been confirmed
If you are able to physically handle the flogger (which is ideal if you are not familiar with the supplier) hold the flogger by the handle and with a medium firm grasp, run your other hand from the handle to the tips of the hair. It is normal on a new horsehair flogger for perhaps a couple of the hairs to come off in your hand the first time but make sure the hair is solidly attached at the handle. Within a couple of times of doing this, there should not be any hairs coming out of the flogger! Also look at the quality of the handle itself. Is the handle solid, and of sound design? Is it aesthetically what you are looking for?
Of course real horsehair floggers do come from horses so if you have sensitive skin or know that you are allergic to hair on animals for example, you should always do a small test patch on your skin in an easy to monitor area such as forearm or another not so sensitive area before using on any sensitive areas. I also suggest washing the hair part of the flogger with a mild shampoo such as "Healthy Hair Care" which is a horse shampoo made for mane & tails. This is available at most tack stores and some drug stores.
Please note: To dry simply pat with a soft dry towel and hang dry. Do not blow dry, as this can make the hair brittle and do not get the leather handle wet.
That pretty much covers horsehair floggers.
Until next time...
